Charlevoix’s enchanting landscapes include a variety of elevations, microclimates and natural habitats, offering breathtaking views and impressive biodiversity.

The colossal impact of a meteorite forged the the region’s unusual topography millions of years ago, creating dramatic changes in elevation. In essence, Charlevoix is a crater—a masterpiece shaped by the forces of nature. This multifaceted area is divided into three levels. At sea level are the lowlands of Isle-aux-Coudres with its waves and currents, as well as the Malbaie River and Gouffre River valleys. Inland, the intermediate plateaux nestled between these two valleys feature a mystic boreal forest, crystal-clear lakes and exciting rivers. Finally, the tundra in the highlands, reaching 1,000 m in altitude, are teeming with hidden treasures.

Most of the region is covered in forests—whether boreal, alpine or mixed—that are home to different areas of vegetation where hundreds of animal species live and thrive. The St. Lawrence and other rivers are a constant presence that add so much to this gorgeous tableau, making Charlevoix a key place for observing marine wildlife.
